Polk boys, girls set for holiday basketball tournaments

Polk County’s boys and girls basketball teams return to Christmas holiday tournament action this season, with the Polk boys heading to Cherokee and the Wolverine girls competing in Asheville.

Polk County head boys coach Josh McEntire and the Wolverines will begin play Monday in the Holidays on the Hardwood tourney in Cherokee. The Wolverines (3-5) will face Asheville (5-2) on Monday at 5:30 p.m. in their opening-round game of the three-day event.

McEntire is hoping the holiday play can help Polk find its rhythm offensively.

“Our offense is still chipping away, but it’s easy, fixable stuff,” McEntire said. “We need to make field goals and make free throws and make easy shots around the basket.

“Hoepfully we can use these next three games to get that settled, especially those being non-conference games.”

The Polk County girls will be in action after Christmas, opening play Dec. 28 in the WNC Wells Fargo Classic, to be held at Carolina Day School as well as UNC-Asheville’s Justice Gym and Kimmel Arena.

The Wolverines (3-5) will face Calvary Baptist Day (2-8) from Winston-Salem in the opening round of the three-day event, the game set for 2:30 p.m. in Justice Gym.
