Polk basketball greats to return to court for alumni game

Many of the most recognizable names in Polk County High School basketball history will return to the court on Saturday night for the 1st Annual Coach Thomas Memorial Polk Alumni Game.

The alumni event is set to begin at 6 p.m. at Polk County High. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for students and those 18 or under.

All proceeds from the game will go to the granddaughter of former Polk County head coach Derek Thomas, the school’s all-time winningest coach, who passed away earlier this year.

Thomas’ daughter, Brandie Mercado, will serve as the coach of the Wolverine Alumni team, which will include players who have worn Wolverine colors since the year 2000. Derrick Twitty will serve as the player/coach for Thomas Troop, featuring alumni who graduated in 1999 and earlier.

A 3-point contest for all ages will also be held. Mountain View BBQ will also be present with wings and BBQ.

Polk County head boys basketball coach Antoni Staley, who is organizing the game, released rosters for each team. Players scheduled to play include:

The game will feature 12-minute quarters. Thomas Troop players will be allowed six fouls while Wolverine Alumni players will be allowed three.
