Patriots pull away down the stretch to top Wolverines

Madison Middle pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat Polk County Middle 32-22 in Thursday’s Blue Ridge Conference action at Polk Middle.

In the Wolverines’ home opener, the Patriots (1-1) broke open a close game with a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter after Polk Middle had closed to within 21-18 on an Owen Justice 3-pointer.

The Wolverines (0-2) opened the game with a 5-0 lead on a Ryland Waters 3-pointer and a Justice steal and layup. Polk Middle built a 10-9 halftime advantage on two late baskets by Matthew Sokil in the second quarter.

Sokil’s layup to open the third quarter pushed Polk’s lead to 12-9, but Madison scored the next seven points before Justice hit a 3-pointer with 1:06 left in the period. Justice connected on another 3-pointer early in the fourth to make it 21-18, but the Patriots responded with seven straight points to take control.

Sokil led Polk County with 10 points. Justice added nine and Waters finished with three.

Polk County Middle travels to Hendersonville Middle on Monday.
