Polk County battled Monday, but dropped a 76-61 decision to Mountain Heritage in Western Highlands Conference boys basketball action in Burnsville.
The Cougars improved to 20-1 overall, 9-0 in WHC play. Polk County dropped to 6-16, 2-7 entering Tuesday’s regular-season finale at Avery.
Mountain Heritage built a 44-19 lead at halftime, but the Wolverines continued to fight in the second half, including a 27-point outburst in the final quarter.
Dominique Carson returned from an injury to score 20 points and move past 500 points for his career. Carson had five steals.
Tyler Staley had 16 points, with Bryson Edwards scoring eight. Shaq Wingo, Max Perkins and Brett Bagwell each had four points, with Keyandre Thomas scoring three points with four assists.
Grant Waddell added two points for the Wolverines.
