Waynesville Middle School relied on its defense and rebounding Tuesday to hand Polk County Middle a 44-32 defeat in Blue Ridge Conference girls basketball action at Polk Middle.
The Wolverines (5-2) led by six points early in the third quarter, only to see Waynesville (6-1) score the next 17 points, allowing the Mountaineers to build a 36-25 advantage with 4:30 left in the fourth period.
Lauren Dotson broke the Waynesville run with a followup of a Polk miss, but the Wolverines could get no closer than nine points in the final minutes.
Waynesville engineered its 17-0 run in large part thanks to controlling the boards on both ends, often limiting Polk Middle to a single shot while getting multiple opportunities to score on its end.
Olivia Overholt led Polk Middle with 17 points, with Tori Thompson scoring 10. Dotson had three and Caroline Taylor added one for the Wolverines, who return to action Jan. 4 at Brevard Middle.

The Wolverines (2-5) started slowing, scoring just four points in the opening period, but rallied and played well in a game that head coach DeShane Briscoe called much closer than the final score indicated.
Chan Barber and Dominique Carson each scored nine points to lead Polk Middle. Steven Chupp scored four points, with Cole Pereira adding three and Dakota Twitty scoring two.
