
Piedmont Community Charter pulled away in the final minutes Tuesday to hand Polk County’s junior varsity a 38-31 setback in its season opener.
The Patriots improved to 3-3 with the win, with Polk now 0-1.
How it unfolded: PCC built a 17-9 lead late in the first half, but the Wolverines responded with a 13-0 spanning the end of the first half and first three minutes of the second half to take a 22-17 advantage.
PCC battled back and forced a 29-29 tie, then took the lead for good with 2:09 remaining. Polk trailed 34-29 before Carmello Young hit a short jumper with 59 seconds left to make it 34-31. That would be all the scoring for the Wolverines as Piedmont tallied the final points of the game.
Scoring: McEntyre had nine points to lead Polk County, with Lorenzo Sanchez scoring seven. Carmello Young added five while Nolan Simpson and Avery Hensley each scored four. Khalil Austin added two.
Next up: Polk County travels Friday to face Landrum, with tipoff set for approximately 5 p.m.
