Polk County Middle's Nate Fagan

Polk County Middle came ever so close Thursday to moving back into a tie for the Blue Ridge Conference East Division lead.

The Wolverines dropped a 38-36 decision to Brevard Middle in an East Division clash at Polk, hampered by struggles at the free-throw line that helped prove the deciding factor in the game.

Brevard improved to 8-2 overall, 6-2 in the East. With Flat Rock upending Rugby, the Blue Devils now have sole possession of the East Division lead. Polk Middle dropped to 4-6, 4-4.

The Wolverines finished Thursday’s game 6-of-15 at the foul line.

“Hit our free throws and we win,” said Polk Middle head coach Brad Muse. “We fought to the end but came up short.”

Luke Garrison had 10 points to lead Polk Middle, with Keyan Simpson scoring nine and Hollis Williams adding eight. Dallas Littlejohn had six points, with Brody Wilkins scoring two and Brennan Oates adding one.

The Wolverines will be on the road for the final week of the regular season, traveling Tuesday to Rugby Middle and then closing the season Thursday at Apple Valley.
