Foul-line prowess helps push Mitchell past Polk County

Mitchell’s Jacoby Dale scored 25 points, including 16 in the second half, to lead the Mountaineers to an 82-72 victory over Polk County in Friday’s Western Highlands Conference boys basketball game in Bakersville.

Mitchell (5-10, 1-6 WHC) made 31 of 36 free throws compared to Polk County’s 12 of 28 to help secure the victory.

The Mountaineers took a 59-57 lead into the final quarter, but Dale’s efforts from the field and foul line helped Mitchell clinch the home victory.

Aaron Jackson led Polk County (4-14, 1-6 WHC) with 29 points and moved into third place on the school’s all-time career scoring list, passing both Carlo Wilkins and Dominique Carson during the game. Jackson now has 1,186 career points.

Khristian Littlejohn added 14 points for the Wolverines. Chase Stansbury scored nine, Nolan Simpson finished with seven, Nate Fagan had six, Ross Dow added five and Brady Carroll scored two.

Polk County is scheduled to host Mountain Heritage on Tuesday.
