Polk County's Khalil Austin

Highland Tech raced to a 23-2 lead at the end of the first quarter Tuesday en route to a 59-42 victory over Polk County in junior varsity basketball action in Gastonia.

The Wolverines dropped to 1-4 with the loss. Highland Tech improved to 3-5.

How it happened: The huge first quarter gave the Rams a lead they never lost. Polk did rally to within 33-23 at the half, but a 16-9 run in the third period kept Highland Tech comfortably in front.

Scoring: Dimitri English and Will Batten each scored 15 points to lead the Rams. No scoring information was available for Polk County.

The win completed a series sweep for Highland Tech, which defeated the Wolverines 42-35 on Friday.

Next up: Polk County will host Landrum on Thursday at 5 p.m.
