Polk County Middle's David Duffy watches a shot fly toward the basket during the first quarter of Wednesday's game

Brevard Middle played the spoiler for Polk Middle’s final home game of the season, rolling to a 49-24 victory Wednesday over the Wolverines.

The Blue Devils improved to 6-5 overall, 5-4 in Blue Ridge Conference East Division games. Polk Middle fell to 0-11, 0-9.

How it happened: Polk’s Luke Garrison scored the game’s first basket, but Brevard Middle responded with a 3-pointer and never lost the lead. A competitive first quarter ended with a Gage Harden basket that moved Polk within 12-6.

But Brevard fashioned a 17-2 run in the second quarter that effectively decided the game’s outcome, allowing the Blue Devils to take a 29-8 lead at halftime.

Scoring: Nate Fagan led Polk Middle with seven points, with Garrison scoring five. Harden and David Duffy, Polk’s two eighth graders playing Wednesday, each scored four points in the final home game.

Hollis Williams and Brody Wilkins each scored two points for the Wolverines.

Next up: Polk Middle travels Thursday to Rugby Middle for its final game of the 2022-23 season.
