Tuesday roundup: Ballard earns medalist honors for Polk golf squad

Will Ballard earned medalist honors as Polk County placed second in Western Highlands Conference golf competition at Meadowbrook Golf Club.

Ballard fired an 80 to finish a shot ahead of Hendersonville’s Alex Yarborough.

Polk County finished 12 shots behind Hendersonville in team competition, compiling a score of 354. Avery followed at 355.

The Wolverines are scheduled to return to action on Thursday, facing Chapman in a nine-hole match at Village Greens.

SOFTBALL
Polk County suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday, falling 9-3 at 2A power Brevard.

Returning the heart of its roster from last season’s 21-4 squad, the Blue Devils improved to 2-0 behind pitcher Casey Gilbert, who struck out seven in the win.

Polk County (3-1) grabbed an early 3-0 lead, but Brevard answered with a run in the bottom of the first, added another in the fourth and then took the lead with four runs in the fifth.

Ashley Kropp finished 2-for-3 to lead the Wolverines, who begin Western Highlands Conference play on Friday at Madison.

Brevard earned a 16-6 win in junior varsity play, the season opener for the Polk JV squad.

BASEBALL
Erwin built a 5-2 lead after three innings Tuesday and went on to defeat Polk County 8-4 in action at Polk.

The Wolverines (1-4) matched Erwin’s first-inning run with one in the second on a Dequan Gary base hit, then added another run in the third on a Mark Mazilli RBI.

But the Warriors scored three times in the top of the sixth to build an 8-2 lead and largely put the game out of reach.

Wes Brady went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead Polk County, which travels to Madison on Friday to begin its Western Highlands Conference schedule.

GIRLS SOCCER
Hickory improved to 4-0, getting a goal from Kaylah Ruff to defeat Polk County 1-0 in girls soccer action in Hickory.

Kara Overholt had nine saves for Polk County, which dropped to 1-2 on the season.

The Wolverines are scheduled to open Western Highlands Conference play on Wednesday at Madison in a 5:30 p.m. game.

The Polk County junior varsity squad scored a 2-1 win.

BOYS TENNIS
West Henderson scored an 8-1 win over Polk County in boys tennis action in Mills River.

The Wolverines doubles team of Nick Morse and Tyler Oxtoby scored the lone win for Polk, an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.

The Wolverines are scheduled to return home on Thursday to face R-S Central in a 4 p.m. match.
