Say this for Polk County’s golf team – no one struck an errant shot in Monday’s opening round of the state 1A tournament.
That’s because no Wolverine teed up at all as rain forced play to end before it ever began.
While a handful of players did tee off at Longleaf Golf and Family Club in Southern Pines, heavy rain forced officials to suspend the round mid-morning with nine threesomes still awaiting their start time. That included all five Polk County players competing in the event.

The tourney is scheduled to resume Tuesday at 9 a.m. While no official announcement came from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, expectations are that the 1A event will be shortened to 18 holes, especially given that more rain is expected Tuesday.
Of those that did see action on Monday, Christ the King’s Colin Ferrick had the most success as he was 1-under-par through eight holes before play was halted.
