Polk golfers set to chase 1A state championship
Polk County’s boys golf team will match its talents against the best teams and players in the state on Monday at the 2021 NCHSAA 1A Men’s Golf State Championship at Foxfire Resort and Golf Club in Jackson Springs.
The Wolverines, 1A West Regional champions, will compete against seven other teams in the state tourney, shortened to one day this year. Players will begin teeing off Monday at 10 a.m. on the 6,339-yard Foxfire layout.
Polk County enters the event having posted the third lowest regional team score, that a 315 in winning the regional tournament at Meadowbrook Golf Course. Two teams, Community School of Davidson and East Surry, each fired 307 in the 1A Midwest Regional and are considered the favorites for the state title. CSD has won the past two 1A state tournaments.
Polk County players are paired with golfers from East Surry and CSD and will be in the final four groups to tee off.
Other teams in the field include Riverside-Martin, Lejeune, Raleigh Charter, Falls Lake Academy and Lincoln Charter. Forty-eight golfers are slated to compete in the event, with 24 of those qualifying as individuals during regional competition.
Polk County’s regional championship was the school’s third and first since 2008, when the Wolverines went on to place third at the state tourney, the program’s best showing in state competition.
