Duo keeps Wolverine girls golf team going through fall season

A pair of elementary school-age golfers climbed onto the driving range Monday afternoon at Tryon Country Club, just a few feet away from the pair of Polk County High School girls golf team members also working on their swings.

PCHS head coach Ty Stott nodded as he watched the pair, a boy and girl, warm up.

“That’s what we need,” Stott said. “The program isn’t going to grow until we have kids playing at that age.”

The Wolverines have, again, struggled with numbers this season, with senior Ashton Capozzi and sophomore Morgan Stott comprising the team most of the season. Morgan Stott has been the team’s primary golfer, competing in six matches this fall, including Tuesday’s final regular-season tourney of the season at Meadowbrook.

With Capozzi likely not playing in next week’s Western Highlands Conference tournament, Morgan Stott will be Polk County’s lone entrant in the event. It will cap a season of growth for the daughter of the head coach as despite playing for the first time, her scores are beginning to become competitive with players from other teams.

“Watching her this season, she has really picked up on it,” Ty Stott said. “The number of good shots is happening a lot more often before we’re seeing the scores come down.

“It’s just a matter of putting it together. I’ve told her just like I’ve told every golfer I’ve ever had, if she puts a little bit of work in over the winter and next summer, her scores will be much better next season.”
