Uwharrie Charter bounces Polk County from state baseball playoffs

Brett Smith twirled a two-hitter Friday as defending state champion Uwharrie Charter topped Polk County 8-1 in the second round of the state 1A playoffs in Asheboro.

Smith struck out nine with one walk as the Eagles improved to 22-5, moving on to Tuesday’s third round.

Polk County’s season ends with a 11-14 record.

Uwharrie edged out to a 2-0 lead after three innings before exploding for six runs in the fourth. Trey Kennedy had a two-run double and Landon Zephir smacked a two-run single during the rally.

Polk County scored its lone run in the sixth as Gunnar Alm reached on a error and Alex Petty was hit by a pitch. Lawson Carter then drilled a single to center to score Alm.

Carter and Karson Scruggs had the Wolverines’ two hits.

Perry took the loss, pitching four innings. Carter closed with two innings of hitless relief.
