Seventh-inning rally lifts Polk Middle to victory

Polk County Middle scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning Monday to snap a 6-6 tie en route to an 8-6 win over Waynesville Middle in the Wolverines’ season opener in Waynesville.

The Wolverines (1-0) put the go-ahead run on base when Grayson Jones doubled to open the seventh. Nick Capozzi reached on an error that moved Jones to third, and Jones scored on Kaleb Kropp’s single.

Capozzi scored later in the inning on Daniel Ruff’s two-out single.

Down 1-0, Polk Middle scored a pair of runs in the second on Shane Parris’ single and a passed ball, then added a run in the third as Capozzi scored on Jordan Bishop’s grounder to take a 3-1 lead.

Waynesville added a run in the fifth, but Polk scored three times in the sixth for a 6-2 lead. Isaac Medford singled to open the inning, then scored on Ruff’s double. Ruff and Parris later scored on Bryson Edwards’ grounder and a Waynesville error.

The Mountaineers scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score and set the stage for the Wolverines’ winning rally.

Ruff finished 3-for-4 to lead Polk at the plate, with Capozzi going 2-for-3. Jones, Kropp, Medford and Parris each had hits.

Jones started and pitched 5 2/3 innings, scattering five hits, striking out five and not allowing an earned run. Jonathan Edwards pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and earned the win.

Polk County Middle returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Macon Middle for a 4:30 p.m. game.
