Polk County Middle’s baseball team mounted a late rally but couldn’t overcome Rugby Middle’s offensive firepower, falling 10-3 Monday in Blue Ridge Conference action at Polk County Recreation Complex.
The Raiders (7-1) took control early, scoring three runs in the first two innings before exploding for six runs in the sixth to secure the victory and end the Wolverines’ two-game winning streak.
Polk Middle (3-8) struggled offensively for much of the game, remaining hitless until Callaway Cameron’s single to lead off the fifth inning. The Wolverines finally broke through in the sixth inning when Hudson Hyde was hit by a pitch and RJ Simpson followed with a single. After a groundout advanced both runners, Carter Wood delivered a two-run single to get Polk on the scoreboard.

The Wolverines continued to battle as Zane McFalls reached on a fielder’s choice, with Wood being forced out at second. Matthew Foy then reached on an error before Cameron drew a walk to load the bases. Gavin Waldbillig was hit by a pitch, forcing in McFalls with Polk’s third run before Rugby recorded the final out to end the threat.
Wood finished 1-for-1 with two RBI to lead Polk Middle’s offense. Cameron went 1-for-1 with a walk, while Simpson contributed a 1-for-3 performance.
Polk Middle will conclude its regular season on Thursday, hosting Hendersonville Middle for a 4:30 p.m. game at the recreation complex.
