Polk County Middle’s baseball season came to an end Monday with a 12-2 loss to Waynesville Middle in the opening round of the Blue Ridge Conference playoffs in Waynesville.
The Mountaineers, the top seed in the BRC West Division, took a 2-1 lead after one inning and steadily built the margin to advance to the semifinals.
Polk Middle ended its season with a 6-7 record.
“While the ultimate goal is to win a conference championship, I am proud of this young team for qualifying for the tournament and representing PCMS with class and respect this season,” said Polk Middle head coach Kenny Hall.
The Wolverines grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first as Gunnar Alm opened the game with a single, stole second, moved to third on Alex Tipton’s one-out single and scored on a passed ball.
Polk had runners in scoring position in every inning thereafter, but couldn’t add to its tally until the fifth inning, when Tipton singled with one out, stole second, took third on Angus Weaver’s base hit and scored on Gabe Alvarado’s infield grounder.
Tipton finished 3-for-3, with Alm, Weaver and Lawson Carter each adding a hit.
