Polk Middle players work on a defensive drill during a recent practice

Smoky Mountain Middle handed Polk County Middle a 13-0 setback Monday in Blue Ridge Conference baseball action in Sylva.

The Mustangs improved to 1-0, with the Wolverines dropping to 0-2.

Nate Fagan and Davis Holbert had base hits for Polk Middle.

“A lot of improvement from last game,” said Polk Middle head coach Alston Rikard. “The team was more aggressive at the plate and Simms Harris had a great first outing pitching for the team overall. Smoky Mountain was just able to hit the ball well and we weren’t.”

Polk Middle is scheduled to make its home debut on Wednesday, weather permitting, hosting Canton Middle at 4:30 p.m. at Polk County Recreation Complex.
