Polk Middle completes sweep of Flat Rock in five-inning win

Polk County Middle School combined an explosive offensive attack with strong pitching Thursday, cruising to a 13-3 victory over Flat Rock Middle in Blue Ridge Conference baseball action.

The Wolverines (3-7) wasted no time seizing control, scoring four runs in the first inning despite not recording a hit. Taking advantage of wildness from Flat Rock pitching, Polk County capitalized on a hit batter, three walks, an error and two more hit batsmen to build an early advantage.

The offensive onslaught continued in the second inning when Polk County added six more runs to extend the lead to 10-0. Gavin Waldbillig delivered a run-scoring double, and Callaway Cameron added a two-run single during the frame. Patient Wolverine hitters drew four walks in the inning, with the team also benefiting from several wild pitches and passed balls.

Waldbillig highlighted Polk County’s three-run fifth inning with a solo home run to center field, his second home run of the week. Carter Wood followed with a double, eventually scoring on Hudson Hyde’s grounder. Matthew Foy capped the scoring with an RBI single that plated Ellis Searcy.

Waldbillig finished 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two RBI and two runs scored to pace the Wolverine attack. Foy added a 2-for-4 performance with an RBI, while Wood went 1-for-2 with a double and three runs scored. Cameron contributed a key hit, driving in two runs.

On the mound, Foy dominated Flat Rock (1-8) through three innings, allowing no hits while striking out six. Wood finished the game with two solid innings, surrendering just one hit.

The Wolverines drew 11 walks in the five-inning contest.

Polk County Middle begins the final week of regular-season play on Monday, hosting Rugby Middle at 4:30 p.m. at Polk County Recreation Complex.
