Polk Middle builds big early lead, posts 9-5 win over Canton

Polk County Middle School jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and went on to post a 9-5 win over Canton Middle School on Monday at Polk County Recreation Complex.

Holden Owens had two hits and drove in four runs to lead the Wolverines (3-3), who built a 7-1 lead after five innings, then scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth after Canton rallied to within two in the top half of the inning.

Polk Middle took an early 2-0 lead on an Owens sacrifice fly, scoring Elijah Sutton, and a Canton error that allowed Clark Phipps to score. The Wolverines then rapped out three straight hits in the second, singles by Avery Edwards, Sutton and Clark Phipps, to load the bases with two outs.

Wilson Edwards was hit by a pitch to drive in one run before Owens followed with a single to drive home Sutton and Phipps and give Polk a 5-0 lead.

The Wolverines added a run in the fourth when Wilson Edwards scored on a passed ball.

Canton scored its first run in the top of the fifth, but Polk Middle pushed the lead back to 7-1 in the bottom of the inning as Avery Edwards singled with two outs, stole second and then scored on a Canton error.

The Black Bears used a pair of hits and three Polk errors to tally four times in the top of the sixth, cutting Polk’s lead to 7-5. But Wilson Edwards opened the bottom of the sixth with a walk, then stole second before scoring on Owens’ double. Owens then stole third and scored on a passed ball to up the lead back to 9-5.

Tyler Harris earned the win for the Wolverines, scattering three hits and striking out seven in five innings.

Avery Edwards also had two hits for Polk Middle, which had eight hits and eight stolen bases in the game.

The Wolverines return to action Thursday, traveling to Waynesville Middle for a 4:30 p.m. game.
