The trip home Tuesday from Avery proved a little more joyous for Polk County’s baseball team.
After defeating the Vikings 13-3 in an afternoon matchup, the Wolverines learned that Madison dropped an 11-6 decision to Mitchell Tuesday evening in Marshall. The Patriots’ loss earned Polk County at least a share of the Western Highlands Conference regulasr-season title.
Polk can clinch sole possession of the conference crown with one win in its final three conference games beginning with Friday’s home game against Avery.

It marks Polk County’s first conference title since 2019 and is the third for head coach Billy Alm (2018, 2019, 2026). It is the eight conference title in program history, with Polk also winning league championships in 2000, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012, all under longtime head coach Ty Stott.
It is the fourth WHC championship this year for Polk County, with the Wolverine boys cross country, boys soccer and wrestling teams also earning league titles.
The Wolverines improved to 13-7 with Tuesday’s win.
