Mitchell grabs early lead, tops Polk County JVs

Mitchell jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and went on Friday to claim a 7-1 victory over Polk County in Western Highlands Conference junior varsity baseball action in Bakersville.

The Mountaineers tallied four times in the first inning, then added two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth en route to the win.

Polk County (4-6) scored its lone run in the fourth inning. Landon Bradley singled to open the frame, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Gabe Alvarado’s one-out double.

Bradley, Alvarado and Kendall McEntyre each went 2-for-3 to lead Polk County, with Casey Beiler adding the Wolverines’ other hit.

Polk County begins its final week of the season on Tuesday, hosting Mountain Heritage at 4:30 p.m.
