A season full of effort delivered a welcome reward Tuesday for Polk County Middle’s baseball team.

The Wolverines notched their first win of the season, handing Bethel Middle a 9-5 setback in a Blue Ridge Conference matchup at Polk County Recreation Complex.

Polk Middle improved to 1-5 with the win.

“I’m so proud of all of the hard work all of the boys have put in,” said Polk Middle head coach Alston Rikard. “They deserve to feel proud of this win, and Im proud of them for it.”

The bottom of the fourth inning proved the deciding moment of the game as Polk Middle scored eight runs in the frame to seize control.

Gavin Waldbillig, Davis Holbert, Nate Fagan, Matthew Foy, Sawyer Huff and Gage Harden each had base hits in the rally, with Harden’s two-out double capping the surge and giving the Wolverines a 9-2 lead.

Polk pushed across its first run in the second inning as Waldbillig singled and later scored on Simms Harris’ base hit.

Huff and Fagan teamed on the mound for the win, the duo combining for eight strikeouts.

Fagan, Huff and Waldbillig each had two hits, with Harden 1-for-2 with two walks and Foy, Harris and Holbert each adding a hit.

Polk Middle is set to travel Wednesday to Flat Rock for a 4:30 p.m. game and its final outing before spring break.
