Avery Edwards held Madison to two hits Wednesday to lead Polk County Middle School to a 5-0 victory in Blue Ridge Middle School Conference action at Polk County Recreation Complex.

Edwards struck out 10 batters in throwing the complete-game shutout and helping the Wolverines improve to 3-1 this season.

Polk Middle grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third as Grayson Jones singled to open the inning, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Evan Rimer’s single. The Wolverines had two runners thrown out at home in the inning to allow Madison to escape further damage.

But that reprieve would be short-lived as Polk scored three times in the fifth inning. Edwards reached on an error with one out, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on Kyler Scruggs’ single. Bryson Ridings followed with a single before Brandon Ridings doubled to drive in both runs.

The Wolverines added another run in the sixth as Grayson Jones walked, moved to second when Rimer was hit by a pitch and then scored on a Madison error.

“We can pitch and we can play defense,” said Polk County head coach Billy Alm. “And we are starting to hit.”

Brandon Ridings and Scruggs each had two hits to lead Polk’s eight-hit attack.

The Wolverines return to action on Monday, traveling to Bethel Middle School for a 4:30 p.m. game.
