Early homers boost Landrum in win at Polk County

Landrum used home runs in each of the first two innings to build an early lead and defeated Polk County 13-3 in Wednesday’s non-conference baseball game at The Bottoms.

Nick DeCapio launched a three-run home run in the first inning to give the Cardinals (9-2) a 3-0 lead, then Nolan Collins added a grand slam in the second to push Landrum’s advantage to 7-1.

Gunnar Alm answered with a solo home run for Polk County in the bottom of the first that cut the deficit to 3-1, but the Cardinals continued to add to their lead.

Nate Fagan drove in both of Polk County’s other runs in the third inning with a two-run single that scored Noah Harden and Alex Perry, pulling the Wolverines within 7-3. But Landrum scored a run in the fourth and put the game away with five runs in the fifth.

Alm finished 2-for-3 with a stolen base for Polk County. Perry went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored, while Cooper Meyer added a hit.

Collins led Landrum’s offensive attack, going 2-for-3 with four RBI. DeCapio finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Grady Zipperer went 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Polk County (7-5) travels to Mountain Heritage on Friday for a Western Highlands Conference game.
