East Rutherford grabbed a quick 3-0 lead Wednesday and made that advantage stand to hand Polk County a 4-0 loss in the Wolverines’ season opener in Forest City.
East Rutherford (1-1) received a sterling pitching performance from Caleb Crain, who allowed two hits in six innings with 14 strikeouts. Hunter Shaw fanned two in one inning of work.
Nick Capozzi and Bryson Edwards had the only base hits for the Wolverines.
All three East Rutherford runs in those first two innings were unearned off starter Jordan Searcy. Polk finished with four errors.
Coble Cameron came on in the third inning in relief of Searcy and allowed two hits and one earned run in four innings. Searcy and Cameron allowed just five hits in the game.
Polk County will return to action Saturday, traveling to West Wilkes to take part in the Blackhawk BEST tournament. The Wolverines will face East Wilkes at 2 p.m. and North Stokes at 4:15 p.m.
