Polk County's Mason Beiler had two hits and three RBI in Thursday's loss

A back-and-forth battle finally tipped Brevard’s way Thursday, the Blue Devils taking a 10-8 victory over Polk County in a Mountain Foothills 7 Conference baseball matchup in Brevard.

The Wolverines end their season with an 8-15 record overall, 2-10 in conference play. The Blue Devils finished 7-16, 3-9. Both teams are expected to just miss playoff berths when the state 2A playoff bracket is announced Monday.

How it happened: Polk County jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, with Gunnar Alm doubling to open the inning, stealing third with two outs and scoring on a wild pitch.

Karson Scruggs drew a two-out walk, moved to second on a passed ball, third on a wild pitch and scored on a Brevard error.

The Blue Devils responded with five straight hits in the bottom of the first to take a 4-2 lead, then added a fun in the third to make it 5-2.

Back came the Wolverines in the fourth. Blaine Turner singled with one out, Lawson Carter singled with two outs and Angus Weaver was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Scruggs drew a walk to score Turner, and Mason Beiler drilled a double that cleared the bases and gave Polk a 6-5 lead.

The Blue Devils came back with three runs in the fourth to take an 8-6 advantage. Polk rallied again in the fifth, pushing across a pair of runs to even the score. Alex Perry and Turner singled, with Perry scoring on an outfield error that also moved Turner to third. Alm drew a walk, and Carter followed with a sacrifice fly to score Turner with the tying run.

But Brevard took advantage of two walks to open the bottom of the fifth and moved around both runners to take a 10-8 lead. Polk had one base runner in both the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn’t move across another run.

At the plate: Beiler finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and Turner and Carter each finished 2-for-4. Alm and Perry added hits for Polk.
