Brevard Middle School built a 5-1 lead, then held off a Polk Middle School comeback to earn a 5-3 win Thursday in middle school baseball action at Polk County Recreation Complex.
Polk Middle dropped to 4-6 with the loss, its next game on April 28 at Asheville Christian Academy.
Trailing 5-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Wolverines got back-to-back doubles from Holden Owens and Tyler Harris to open the inning. A passed ball moved Harris to third, and he scored on Austin Wilson’s ground ball.
The Wolverines had the tying run at the plate before Brevard escaped the threat to hold on for the win.
The Blue Devils scored three runs in the first, stringing together three straight hits to build the lead. Polk County finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth as Wilson Edwards singled, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and then stole home.
Brevard pushed the lead to 5-1 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.
Edwards had two hits to lead Polk Middle at the plate, with Elijah Sutton, Owens, Harris and Brandon Ridings also recording a hit.
