Gunnar Alm’s assault on Polk County’s baseball record book has begun in earnest.
Alm slammed his 18th career home run Monday in Polk County’s 3-1 Mountain Foothills 7 Conference loss at Hendersonville, equalling the school record set in the 1996-98 seasons by Eric Luckadoo.
The Wolverine junior finished 2-for-2 and is now hitting .581 for the season with seven home runs. Alm is closing in on a number of other school career records, with walks, steals and total bases the next in his sights.

Alm’s homer in the third inning staked freshman pitcher Nate Fagan to a 1-0 lead. Fagan kept that advantage until the sixth, when Hendersonville (6-9, 4-3) strung together four hits to score three runs and earn the victory.
Fagan struck out seven, walked two and allowed five hits in the loss.
Mason Beiler, Mark Jarrett and Fagan each had base hits for the Wolverines, who had multiple runners on base in the fourth and fifth innings but couldn’t score.
Polk County (6-10, 0-6) returns home Tuesday, hosting Patton in another league matchup.
