Alm matches new state record for career runs

2 min read

Gunnar Alm now owns a piece of state baseball history.

Just not alone. And perhaps not for long.

When Alm scored his second run in Friday’s 8-4 win over Hendersonville, the Polk County senior thought he’d set a new state record for most runs scored in a career, his 149th run breaking the old mark of 148 set by West Henderson’s Josh Moore in 2005-2008.

Alm scored again in the top of the eighth inning to put his career total at 150 heading into the postseason.

But it turns out that Terry Sanford’s Josh Mozingo is also at 150 runs heading into the playoffs – Mozingo scored three runs in Thursday’s win over Westover to reach 150 for his career.

The East Carolina-bound senior also set the state record for career hits in that win, reaching 167. He added another hit in Friday’s loss to C.B. Aycock.

Thus both players will enter the postseason with 150 runs, the playoffs to decide whether either will hold the state record or if they will share it.

Polk County currently projects as the 11th seed in the 3A West bracket. That would have them open the playoffs on Tuesday at home against Draughn, then likely head to North Wilkes for a second-round game.

Terry Sanford currently sits ninth in state 6A RPI and will receive a first-round bye. So Alm could get an extra game on Monzingo depending on how each team fares in the postseason.
