Wolverines sweep Avery to secure 1A playoff berth
Polk County clinched a 1A postseason berth with a straight-set win over Avery, sweeping the Vikings in a Western Highlands Conference match
Polk County strolled all the way into the state 1A playoffs Monday night.
The Wolverines clinched a postseason berth with a straight-set win over Avery, sweeping the Vikings in a Western Highlands Conference match at Polk.
The fairly easy 25-9, 25-9, 25-16 victory assured Polk County of finishing as the top 1A team in the WHC as the Wolverines improved to 10-7, 6-1. Avery dropped to 7-10, 3-4.
Polk County also still remains in the hunt for the WHC regular-season championship, currently tied with Owen, whom the Wolverines defeated last week.
“I feel like we had that huge game when we played Owen last week. We wanted to beat them and tie the conference up so that we hopefully can clinch a conference championship,” said Polk County head coach Molly Hill. “We all shared that common goal, and it feels like we’re finally playing like a team.
“It’s nice to see. We’ve battled that so long and now everything is clicking nicely.”
Everything clicked throughout Monday’s match for Polk as only the third set proved close at any point, the Vikings staying close to the Wolverines until midway through the set. Avery struggled with Polk’s hitting throughout the match, especially in the middle, where Mireya Roman finished with nine kills.
Marylin Castillo added seven kills while Ansley Lynch had 14 digs and Carolina Castillo had 11 digs.
Sydney Waldman had 36 assists for Polk County, which travels Wednesday to Brevard for a non-conference battle.
