Polk County’s boys golf team finished the opening round of the Western Highlands Conference tournament Tuesday in third place, just 16 strokes off the lead.
The Wolverines posted a team score of 364 in the first round held at Grassy Creek Golf & Country Club in Spruce Pine. That trails leader Mitchell’s 348 and Avery’s 361.
Mountain Heritage followed with a 385. Madison only had two golfers participate and thus didn’t post a team score while Owen has no team this season.
Polk County’s Dillon Overholt and Hunter Lynch each fired 89s to lead the Wolverines. Overholt and Lynch trail co-leaders Austin McGuire and Ty Pitman of Mitchell by five shots.
The final round of the tournament is set for Thursday at Tryon Country Club.
