West Henderson pitching checks Polk in 10-0 victory

Polk County's Tyler Harris

West Henderson senior Sam Staton held Polk County hitless until the fifth inning Saturday, his effort on the mound helping lift the Falcons to a 10-0 victory over Polk in non-conference baseball action in Mills River.

Staton struck out five and walked two in shutting down the Polk County offense. The Wolverines (0-2) got their lone hit of the game with two outs in the fifth on Zane Johnson’s single.

Staton left after the fifth. Will Lindsey pitched a hitless sixth inning for the Falcons (2-1).

Tyler Harris struck out five and allowed nine hits in 4 2/3 innings in taking the loss. Harris threw 95 pitches in the game, meaning he must have four days of rest before pitching again under North Carolina High School Athletic Association rules.

West Henderson earned a 9-3 victory in junior varsity play.

Polk County travels to Pisgah on Monday for another non-conference matchup.
