Polk County’s Dustin Calvert and Triston Watkins each came within one win Saturday of qualifying for the state 2A wrestling tournament, only to fall in their consolation semifinal matches.
Both Wolverine wrestlers were eliminated just before reaching the final four in their respective weight classes at the 2A West Regional tournament at West Lincoln High School.
Calvert began Saturday with a loss to top-seeded Lathan Kee of Shelby in the 152-pound weight class. Kee’s pin at the end of the first period improved his season record to 51-1 and dropped Calvert into the consolation semifinals.
There Calvert faced Billy Goble of West Lincoln. But Goble prevailed with a 5-4 decision to deny Calvert a trip to the state 2A tournament.
Watkins opened his Saturday in the 106-pound class with a first-period pin of Maiden’s Kevin Vongphachanh. Watkins then notched a second-period pin of Bunker Hill’s Cayman Carpenter to move into the consolation semifinals
Lincolnton’s Desmen Jefferies, though, ended Watkins’ state tourney hopes with a pin early in the first period.
