Polk County Middle opened its quest for a Blue Ridge Middle School Conference tournament title on Monday with a straight-set win over Canton Middle in first-round playoff action at Polk.
The Wolverines, 12-1, earned a 25-9, 25-20 win to advance to Wednesday’s semifinals, where they will host the winner of Monday’s Brevard-Waynesville match. Wednesday’s game will be at 4:30 p.m.
Kristen Hall served 14 straight points in the opening set Monday to spark Polk Middle. The Bears (6-7) fought back in the second set before Polk ultimately prevailed.
“We struggled to gain the lead and hold them off. It was definitely too close for our taste,” said Polk County head coach Matthew Russell of the second set.
“Wednesday should present a greater test for us and I hope the girls will be focused and not looking past that game to Monday’s championship.”
