Polk County Middle narrowly missed continuing its winning ways on Monday, dropping a 45-42 decision at Rugby in a Blue Ridge Conference boys basketball game in Mills River.

The Wolverines (1-2) just missed on a 3-point attempt in the final seconds that would have sent the game to overtime.

Rugby (2-1) opened the game on a 17-1 run, but Polk Middle steadily fought back to have a shot at tying the game before the buzzer.

Dominique Carson led Polk Middle with 15 points. Chan Barber added nine, with Dakota Twitty scoring seven, Kanye Staley finishing with six and Lawson Carter and Steven Chupp each scoring three.

WOLVERINE GIRLS ROLL: Polk Middle earned its second straight win, rolling past the Raiders 37-23 in girls action.

Olivia Overholt scored 16 points and Tori Thompson added 15 to lead Polk Middle. The Wolverines (2-1) also received two points each from Lauren Dotson, Sara Wilson and Caroline Taylor.

The Wolverines return home Thursday to host Apple Valley at 4:30 p.m.
