Polk County took Pisgah’s best shot Wednesday night – and gave the Bears a few in return.
The Wolverines rebounded from a first-set loss to roll to a 3-1 win over visiting Pisgah in non-conference volleyball action, giving Polk a season sweep of the two games between the teams.
Polk more than earned a 17-25, 25-17, 25-14, 25-21 win to snap a two-game losing streak. The Wolverines improved to 2-4, with Pisgah falling to 4-4 and seeing its two-game winning streak end.
The Bears controlled play throughout the first set, with Carter Gibson leading the Pisgah attack. But Polk County emerged from its team huddle before the second set with a sense of purpose, picking up the pace and intensity of play.
The Wolverines raced to an 11-4 lead in the set, then watched Pisgah fight back to pull within 14-11. But the Bears would get no closer than four points the rest of the way, with a Mireya Roman kill sealing the set.
Polk County had no trouble winning the third set, but the fourth set proved close throughout. The Wolverines snapped a 9-9 tie with a Kristen Hall kill, a Meadow Becker tip and a Hall tip giving Polk a 12-9 lead.
Polk inched ahead 17-13 on a Marilyn Castillo kill, but the Bears pulled back within two and still trailed 21-18 before a Roman kill and ace and a Hall kill helped bring up match point.
Gibson ripped a kill to keep Pisgah alive for one point before Becker tapped a free ball at the net to the floor to close the match.
Hall had 11 digs and 13 kills for Polk County, with Roman adding 11 kills and Grace Lauer finishing with 10 kills. Sydney Waldman had 39 assists as Polk County hit effectively throughout the final three sets.
Ansley Lynch added 25 digs, with Carolina Castillo posting nine digs and four aces.
The Wolverines will be back on the court Tuesday, hosting East Henderson.
