Avery raced to a 30-13 halftime lead and went on to hand Polk County a 72-37 defeat Tuesday in Western Highlands Conference girls basketball action in Newland.

The Vikings improved to 9-4 overall, 1-1 with the win. Polk County dropped to 1-12, 0-2.

Autumn Owen and Sara Muse each scored 12 points to lead the Wolverines, with Ansley Lynch and Mariah Overholt each scoring four. Bella Marino and Rachael Davis each added two points and Kristen Hall had one point for the Wolverines.

VIKING BOYS WIN: UNC Asheville-bound senior Deacon Heath scored 35 points to lead Avery to an 82-54 win over Polk County in boys action.

The Vikings (10-3, 2-0), ranked 10th in this week’s NCPreps.com state 1A poll, built a 42-28 halftime lead and pulled away in the second half for the victory.

Clark Phipps scored 27 points to lead Polk County (2-10, 0-2), with Jaylon Bontrager scoring seven. Jason Fox added six, with Seth Hardin scoring five, Wilson Edwards adding three and Payton Dill, Sedrick Pickett and Kiyon Staley each adding two.

Polk County returns home Friday to face Mitchell in another night of conference action.
