Mountaineers pull away in second half to top Wolverines

Polk County Middle defenders Hunter Moore, Jared Searcy and Brady Hall gang up to stop a Waynesville Middle runner during Wednesday's game.

Three years after meeting in the championship game of the Blue Ridge Middle School Conference, Polk County Middle and Waynesville Middle met again Wednesday in the league’s postseason.

And, again, Waynesville emerged the winner.

The Mountaineer offense exploded in the second half en route to a 38-20 win over the Wolverines in the BRMSC’s fourth-place bowl game at Polk Middle.

After giving up a touchdown late in the first period, Polk Middle (2-6) answered midway through the second quarter. A long pass to Nate Henderson moved the Wolverines to the Waynesville 4, and Henderson scored a play later to cut the deficit to 8-6.

A Tyler Staley interception stopped Waynesville’s next drive, but the Mountaineers returned the favor with an interception of their own, then scored just before halftime to take a 16-6 lead.

Waynesville (4-4) then pulled away in the second half for the victory.
