Middle school notes: Polk girls soccer off to 2-0 start

A 2-0 start has Travis Aldred excited about Polk County Middle’s girls soccer season, though he admits there’s still much work for the Wolverines to do.

Polk Middle followed its season-opening 2-0 win at Macon Middle with a 2-1 victory over Brevard Middle on Monday at home, earning the victory on a cold, rainy afternoon.

“We still have a lot of work to do all around but a win is a win,” said Aldred, who is helping coach the team this season. “Defense is playing great.”

The fact that three of Polk County High’s five goals in Monday’s win at Mountain Heritage were scored by freshmen helps show the rebuilding job that the Wolverines faced this season. But going on the road for that opening win gave Aldred reason to think this season’s squad could be one to watch out for as the season progresses.

“I thought as a team for the first game, we played well, a much better start then last year,” he said. “(We) still have a lot of work to do, and hope to continue to get better and better each game.”

A tough three-game stretch begins Thursday for Polk Middle with a road game at Rugby. The Wolverines then travel to Apple Valley next Monday before hosting a Hendersonville Middle squad also off to a 2-0 start on March 23.

This year’s team includes: Belen Akers, Susanna Ashworth, Itzy Ave, Alana Ballew, Megan Blackwell, Rollins Carter, Lauren Dotson, Caelan Gaul, Madison Geddings, Julia Griffin, Scout Harmon, Sara Muse, Taytem Johnson, Elise-Morrah Padgett, Savannah Parris, Jamilett Ramirez, Madi Smith, Ella Waldman, Cameron Ward and Kailey Ward.

CANTON MIDDLE ROUTS POLK BASEBALL: Canton Middle rolled to a 16-1 win over Polk County Middle on Monday in baseball action at Polk County Recreation Complex.

The Bears scored six runs in the first, then added nine more in the second in a game shortened to three innings.

Canton Middle limited Polk to one hit, that a single by Evan Jones.

SOFTBALL FALLS TO BREVARD: Polk Middle dropped to 0-2 on the season with a 12-7 loss Monday to Brevard Middle.

The Wolverines are slated to be back in action on Thursday, traveling to Rugby.

This year’s team includes: Jessie Emory, Mikailah Hal, Kaylin Jenkins, Maddie Pittman, Emily Prince, Alana Jergenson, Brisa Ramirez, Alexis McCraw, Keeleigh Bradley, Emilee Frazier, Lacey Gosnell, Carley Lawter, Tori Thompson, Amberlynn Scruggs
