Middle school notes: Polk girls soccer off to 2-0 start

A 2-0 start has Travis Aldred excited about Polk County Middle’s girls soccer season, though he admits there’s still much work for the Wolverines to do.

Polk Middle followed its season-opening 2-0 win at Macon Middle with a 2-1 victory over Brevard Middle on Monday at home, earning the victory on a cold, rainy afternoon.

“We still have a lot of work to do all around but a win is a win,” said Aldred, who is helping coach the team this season. “Defense is playing great.”

The fact that three of Polk County High’s five goals in Monday’s win at Mountain Heritage were scored by freshmen helps show the rebuilding job that the Wolverines faced this season. But going on the road for that opening win gave Aldred reason to think this season’s squad could be one to watch out for as the season progresses.

“I thought as a team for the first game, we played well, a much better start then last year,” he said. “(We) still have a lot of work to do, and hope to continue to get better and better each game.”
