JV roundup: Mitchell sweeps past Polk in girls, boys play

Polk County's Tyler Staley had seven points in Friday's loss to Mitchell.

Mitchell broke open a close game at the half Friday to take a 33-23 win over Polk County in girls junior varsity basketball action at Polk County.

The Mountaineers led 12-9 at the half, but pulled away in the final half to secure the Western Highlands Conference win.

Marissa Twitty led Polk County with eight points, with Emmie McDowell scoring five and Alana Jergenson adding four. Kaylin Jenkins, Emily Prince and Anna McFadden all added two points for the Wolverines.

POLK JV BOYS FALL: Polk County made it close several times in the second half, but could never take the lead and ultimately dropped a 53-41 decision to Mitchell in JV boys play.

Wesley Royster led Polk County with 11 points, including three 3-pointers, with Tyler Staley hitting two threes and scoring eight points.

Keyandre Thomas had seven points for the Wolverines, with Shaq Wingo, Nate Henderson and Bryson Edwards each adding four points.

Shane Parris and Grant Waddell each scored two points for Polk.

Both Polk County teams will next be in action on Friday, hosting Madison.
