All-conference returnees, talented freshmen part of Polk volleyball varsity roster

Senior Kara Overholt is one of three returning all-conference players for Polk County's varsity volleyball squad.

Polk County head volleyball coach Molly Corhn will enter her first season with a young but talented varsity roster.

Corhn, named in July as Polk County’s head coach, announced on Saturday the varsity and junior varsity rosters for the upcoming season, doing so after two days of tryouts.

Nine players comprise the varsity roster, including returning all-Western Highlands Conference players Sarah Phipps, Kara Overholt and Lily Owens. Also returning with varsity experience are Savannah Ross, Ashley Love and Addie Lynch. Phipps and Overholt are the only seniors on the squad.

Joining that group will be a trio of freshmen – Reagan Waddell, Kendall Hall and Cameron Capozzi. Each started last season for Polk County Middle School’s unbeaten squad and each played with the Xcel Volleyball squad that finished third earlier this summer at the 41st AAU Girls’ Junior National Volleyball Championships in Orlando. Waddell and Hall were named to the tournament’s 10-player all-star team.

The junior varsity squad includes: Mya Johnston, Hunter Kilgore, Malena Roman, Georgia Garrett, Lily Nelson, Sara McCown, Kate Padgett, Maddie Blackwell, India Branham, Elianna Gil, Lauren Ketwitz and Ashley Scruggs

Both squads have their first preseason test on Saturday, Aug. 9 in a day-long event at Xcel Sportsplex just outside Hendersonville. The teams open the regular season on August 19 at West Henderson.
