Polk County graduate Wil Rimer scored the first goal of his college career on Sunday in Emory & Henry’s 6-0 win over Valley Forge in the Wasps’ home opener.
Rimer tallied in the 55th minute for Emory & Henry (2-0). In the Wasps’ first two games, Rimer, who missed all of last season with an injury, has taken three shots.
Fomer Polk County standout Ashley Love started at forward for Emory & Henry in the Wasps’ season-opening 1-0 overtime loss to Averett.
COKER VOLLEYBALL: Junior Kara Overholt has played a key role in Coker’s 3-1 start.
Overholt has a team-high 65 digs through the first four matches. That total also ranks fourth in the South Atlantic Conference.
GARDNER-WEBB CROSS COUNTRY: Mitchell Brown had a successful start to his Division I running career, finishing as Gardner-Webb’s second runner in the WCU Cross Country Festival held Saturday in Cullowhee.
Brown finished 31st overall with a time of 16:46.91.
Gardner-Webb placed fourth in the four-team competition.
UNC-GREENSBORO CROSS COUNTRY: Former Polk County standout India Godlock competed Saturday in the first race of her college career, placing 53rd overall in the Elon University Opener.
The UNC Greensboro freshman recorded a time of 16:25 in the race.
UNCG placed seventh in the 12-team field.
SALEM CROSS COUNTRY: Sophomore Jessica Bailey finished 37th overall in the 2017 Catawba Chick-Fil-A Cross Country Meet held Saturday in Salisbury.
Bailey finished the course in a time of 23:26.2.
Salem placed 10th overall in the 15-team field.
MARS HILL FOOTBALL: Anthony Carson recorded two solo tackles and an assist in the Lions’ 40-14 win over Shorter College.
Carson started the game at cornerback for the Lions.
METHODIST FOOTBALL: D.J. Twitty started at left guard for the Monarchs in their 70-0 loss to Division I Campbell in the season opener for both teams.
MONTREAT CROSS COUNTRY: Eli Hall placed 36th overall in the 2017 Hyder-McCahill Invitational, held at Montreat.
Hall finished the course with a time of 19:52.7 as Montreat won the men’s competition on its home course.
BREVARD SOCCER: Senior Austin Wolfe started in midfield for the Tornados in their 3-0 loss to Point University. Wolfe played 38 minutes.
