College roundup: Kropp leading Coker; track alums cross paths

Former Polk County basketball standout Hayley Kropp is off to a solid start in her first season at Coker College.

The Wolverines’ all-time leading scorer is averaging a team-best 11.6 points through the Cobras’ first 10 games. Coker takes a 4-6 record into Monday’s home game with Queens.

Kropp, who transferred to Coker prior to this season, scored a season-high 26 points in a loss at Carson-Newman. She ranks fifth in the South Atlantic Conference in 3-pointers per game with 2.2.

DOYLE, BROWN CROSS PATHS: Former Polk County teammates Sean Doyle and Mitchell Brown crossed paths at the Mountaineer Open indoor track meet earlier this month.

Running for host Appalachian State, Doyle finished second in the 1-mile run at the event in a time of 4:32.14.

Brown, running for Gardner-Webb, took third in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:31.05.

DARDEN, SUDDETH ALSO INTERSECT: Two other former Polk County teammates competed in the JDL College Kick-off Classic earlier this month.

JC Suddeth competed in the shot put (41-3 1/4) and weight throw (47-1, 8th) for Wingate.

Darden, a senior at Lees-McRae, competed in the 60-meter dash (7.4), the 200-meter dash (23.58) and the 4×400-meter relay (3:34.71).

HALL OPENS SEASON: Former Wolverine Eli Hall opened his indoor season at the Montreat College Indoor Kickoff.

Hall placed third in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:27.13.
