Brevard Middle pulls away to top Polk Middle, 4-1

Polk County Middle's Matias Akers fights for possession during Wednesday's match.

For a moment early in the second half Wednesday, it looked as if Polk County Middle’s boys soccer team had set the stage for a home victory.

Instead, Brevard Middle soon set the notion to rest.

The Blue Devils scored three times in the second half, pulling away for a 4-1 win over Polk Middle in a Blue Ridge Middle School Conference match at Polk.

Trailing 1-0 at intermission, Polk Middle (2-5) evened the match early in the final half on a Brett Bagwell goal. Taking a long throw-in from Matias Akers, Bagwell’s low left-footed kick beat the Brevard goalkeeper with 26:33 left in the match.

But Brevard (4-3) began aggressively pushing into Polk’s half of the field, quickly re-taking the lead and adding a pair of insurance goals for the final margin.

The Wolverines also pressed hard down the stretch, forcing a handful of corner kicks, but could never again find the net before the final whistle.

Polk Middle will now look to snap its four-match losing streak on Monday, traveling to Rugby for a 4:30 p.m. match.
