Polk to host North Rowan in football playoff opener

Polk County will host North Rowan in the opening round of the 1AA football playoffs, according to official brackets released Saturday by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.

The Wolverines (7-4) are seeded eighth in the 1AA West bracket and will welcome the 9th-seeded Cavaliers (8-3) to G.M. Tennant Stadium on Friday. It will be Polk County’s first home playoff game since a 22-21 first-round win over Lexington in 2014.

North Rowan finished third behind North Stanly and West Montgomery in the Yadkin Valley Conference. The Cavaliers are led by senior running back Jaleel Webster, who rushed for 1,416 yards and 14 touchdowns, and junior quarterback Willis Mitchell, who has thrown for 1,719 yards and 18 touchdowns.

The NCHSAA initially released pairings showing Polk County at North Rowan. But the Association used the wrong MaxPreps ratings in its first draft and had to revise all brackets to reflect the correct ratings.
