15U title highlights opening weekend for expanded Polk County Volleyball Club lineup

Polk County Volleyball Club opened its 2018 season with an expanded lineup of teams making a solid showing Saturday in the Southeast Alliance Volleyball League Icebreaker tournament

Polk County Volleyball Club opened its 2018 season with an expanded lineup of teams making a solid showing Saturday in the Southeast Alliance Volleyball League Icebreaker tournament.

PCVC is fielding four teams this season for the first time, those teams including:

* A 12U team team led by Polk County High School assistant coach Jon Ezell and comprised of fifth and sixth graders

* A 13U team team led by Polk County High School head coach Molly Hill and former PCHS assistant Christen Smith and comprised of seventh graders

* A 15U team led by Polk County Middle School assistant coach Donna Hall and husband Kenny Hall as well as PCHS seniors Reagan Waddell and Kendall Hall and comprised of PCHS ninth graders

* A 17U also led by the Halls and Waddell and comprised mostly of PCHS sophomores. The team plans to play up a division this season against 17 and 18-year-old teams.

The 15U team won all six of its matches Saturday to take top honors in the tournament held at Xcel Sportsplex in Hendersonville.

The squad lost just one set on the day, that coming in the 20-25, 25-15, 15-5 win over Biltmore 15 Elite (of Asheville’s Biltmore Volleyball Academy) in the championship match. In the team’s first five matches, no opponent scored more than 18 points.

The 13U team bounced back from a tough opening loss to go 3-2 in the tourney held in Simpsonville, S.C. PCVC suffered a 25-18, 21-15, 15-10 loss to Magnum 13 Red in its opener, then won three straight matches before falling in the Silver Bracket semifinals to USA 13 Purple Brook.

The PCVC 12s enjoyed a successful debut in Columbia, S.C., going 2-3 and reaching the final of the Bronze Bracket.

After two losses in pool play, the PCVC 12s won back-to-back matches before falling 26-24, 25-17 to Carolina Islanders 12 Elite.

The PCVS 17u team finished 1-3 in the difficult 17-18 division played at Xcel Sportsplex in Hendersonville. PCVC won its opener 25-9, 25-18 against XCel 17C Armour.

All four PCVC teams will next be in action on Feb. 10 in the SAVL Mizuno Challenge. The 12U, 13U and 17U teams will compete at the STAR Center in Spartanburg while the 15U squad will travel to Columbia, S.C.
